This 45-minute media circus took over a week to plan and coordinate. Producer John Naughton of IBT Media said, "It was a grand scale, live production. The variables were tremendous. The historic moment was unfolding before our eyes. Yeah, no pressure… But we have such a great team, we were prepared and the whole thing rolled on without a hitch. We were all literally "the man behind the curtain."" IBT Media had a crew of 8 on the scene. One camera was on a jib getting sweeping overhead shots of the crowd and the stage. Another camera focused on the speakers at the microphone. A third camera, hand-held, zipped in and out of the crowd, getting human interest shots. Behind the curtain, expert sound technicians ensured quality audio, a technical director selected the best camera angles and a switcher operator sent the line feed to the tape decks and the satellite truck. John did a quick on-site edit of the program and B-Roll to release to news stations all over the country. Douglas Burton, who ran the main camera during the production, also authored and duplicated a stack of DVDs for GM to use for promotions.
IBT Media captured the essence of these unique businesses through the stories the executives told. The interviews were beautifully shot, concisely edited and superimposed over colorful spring flowers and gardens, keeping with the Chamber’s theme this year of Grow Your Business. In tough economic times, it is even more important to keep focused.
Shooting the installation of a cleaner on a conveyor belt 67 feet in the air has its share of challenges. For instance, if a tool is forgotten, it’s a long way down the cat walk to get what you need. And of course, if you slip, you’re not gonna get a second chance. So we harnessed in our videographer and went to work creating the step-by-step instructional video. IBT Media hasn’t met a challenge that couldn’t be tackled.
July, 2008In July, IBT Media accompanied the Publishers Clearing House prize patrol as they presented a $10,000 award to Julie Clark of Lee's Summit, MO. Publishers Clearing House has visited the Kansas City area numerous times in the past several years and IBT Media is routinely on hand to capture the reaction of local residents to these surprise visits. Footage is later incorporated into TV commercials promoting Publishers Clearing House. June, 2008In June, IBT Media followed the wheat harvest in Kansas, Oklahoma and Nebraska for an upcoming History Channel episode of Modern Marvels: "Wheat." With Modern Marvels: "Bread," under their belts, the IBT Media team was already well versed in the milling and mass baking process. Beginning in the fields of wheat and ending in WheatFields Bakery Cafe, in Lawrence, Kansas, the crew followed the cultivation, harvest and end use of wheat from the greenhouse to the oven and beyond. Capturing the wheat harvest outside Elk City, Oklahoma, cameraman Bob Brunk risked life and limb, moving in and around five giant threshing combines moving in choreographed sequence. He continued after dark in the headlights of the massive machines, nearly falling into the grain bin going after the ultimate shot. Custom harvester Ron Misener, facilitated the shoot by commanding the movement of the combines via two-way radio, following producer Kaylan Eggert's requests. History was served when an old-timer demonstrated the use of a hand scythe while five combines bore down on him. The project included working in the greenhouses of AgriPro in Junction City, Kansas, where they breed wheat, constantly developing new varieties for the field. Our travels again took us to Kansas State University in Manhattan, Kansas, to shoot in labs and out in the field. Temperatures varied from a chilly visit to a walk-in freezer containing thousands of varieties of seeds to a typically hot Kansas afternoon, shooting Kansas wheat under cultivation. A final stop brought us to Grand Island, Nebraska to see wheat being made into "bio-compostable" products intended to replace everyday items made from plastic. In all, the nine-day adventure marked yet another fine collaboration between Actuality Productions, the producer of Modern Marvels and IBT Media. Watch for the show on the History Channel, soon. June, 2008Deep under Iowa’s rich farmland is another bounty which is harvested: Rock and minerals. Conveyor belts are an essential part of every mining operation. Fine chalky powder in the damp environment becomes a clay mud that dries into cement which builds up. The belts must be cleaned to avoid loss of product and costly breakdowns. Flexco provides the tools to get the job done efficiently. Martin Marietta Durham Mine near Pella, Iowa hosted IBT Media for Flexco’s next edition in the series of belt cleaner installation videos. IBT Media traveled 150 feet down into the world’s underbelly. We followed a maze of tunnels into the abyss, burning Biodiesel in trucks that never see the light of day. The abyss was very much a world of its own, reminiscent of the Batcave. A complete lack of light, high rock ceilings, pillars carved into the earth, twists and turns can lead one to feel lost. The biggest challenges… the dark, the cold and the dust. Video requires good light. A generator rattled as flood lights were placed around the work area. The camera had a Sun Gun mounted on top to shine anywhere the lens was pointed. It was 90 degrees and sunny outside. Inside the mine, it was 54 degrees and dank. The cameraman was so cold his fingers went numb. Keep an eye on the Flexco website for the video. June, 2008IBT Media dodged tornado spawning thunderstorms and emerged in an oasis where automobiles of by-gone eras are resurrected: McPherson College, the only accredited college that offers a 4-year degree in Automotive Restoration Technology. The final show will be featured on World’s Greatest, a Discover Entertainment program distributed mainly via internet. Their mission: "To prepare students for leadership in the field of professional automotive restoration by instilling values of craftsmanship, authenticity and integrity." Every detail of the original cars, right down to the last stitch in the leather upholstery, is meticulously researched and recreated in their shop. The students learn from some of the best restorers in the world, how to rebuild a pile of rusting history from the ground up. Comedian Jay Leno is a supporter of the college, having purchased several of their restored cars and offering a full ride scholarship to a hard-working student every year. February, 2008IBT Media spent a day with faculty and students at Nebraska Wesleyan University in Lincoln, Nebraska as they demonstrated the talents of trained rats. Footage from the shoot will be incorporated into a new Modern Marvels episode, Rats. The rats learn physical feats during a Basic Behavior Principles class within the Department of Psychology. The training culminates in an annual event, Xtreme Rat Challenge, at the end of the semester. Despite their training, the rats were rather unpredictable in front of the camera. At times, the Varicam HD camera and boom mic were close enough for the rats to jump onboard and, more than once, they did. In addition to unfamiliar lighting and crew, the "rat cam" (another camera inspired by Modern Marvels producer Kaylan Eggert) captured the action at their level as they climbed, crawled, jumped and swam through each challenge. In the end, it was another successful shoot by IBT Media. Watch for Modern Marvels: Rats to air April 28, 2008 on the History Channel. January, 2008As part of its continuing work with the History Channel, IBT Media joined the Navy, at least momentarily. Traveling with full video equipment, IBT Media landed on USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76) which was doing maneuvers off the coast of California. A flight from NAS North Island (Coronado, California) on January 29 to the USS Ronald Reagan flight deck was the mode of transportation for a video shoot of the on-going Modern Marvels series on the History Channel. The Reagan will be part of the third episode in a series on the World’s Strongest. The scenes on the Reagan highlight the carrier’s four deck edge elevators. Each of the elevators can lift two aircraft from the hangar bay below to the 4.5-acre flight deck in seconds. The maximum lift capacity is 200,000 lbs. with an average lift cycle of 10 seconds. IBT Media departed the following day on a return flight on a US Navy C-2A aircraft. Be sure to catch the details of the Reagan on Modern Marvels when World’s Strongest airs March 6, 2008. You can view the full episode on The History Channel's Web site. November, 2007Far flung forces gathered in Kansas City to promote petunias. Theo Gabay, of Swedish production company Appetite, met up with flowers from Florida, on-camera talent from Kansas City and a novel idea. The result is a :30 TV commercial that urges viewers to "accept the gardener" in themselves. The ad uses humor to sell Wave Petunias by Ball Horticultural. Wave addicts meet and confess their obsession. The "Twelve Step" program on the wall helps them accept their irresistible urges. Actors in pink outfits with Wave’s patented pink pots as hats sit in a half circle, emulating group therapy. IBT Media made all production arrangements including cast, crew, hair, make-up and post-production. Mr. Gabay, a music video/TV/corporate presentation producer says he looks forward to working with IBT Media again soon. “This was one of the smoothest run productions I have ever directed.” He credits IBT Media’s talent, creativity, flexibility and reasonable rates as key points. Watch for Brenda’s PP Meeting: Possessed by Pink on the HGTV network this spring. November, 2007The annual gala auction of Catholic Charities of Kansas City and St. Joseph (Missouri) is always a time of great excitement, fellowship and generosity for the several hundred benefactors who come out for a grand evening. This year's event, held at Kansas City's Downtown Marriott, had a special feature: the premiere of a new video produced for Catholic Charities by IBT Media. Designed to touch hearts, raise funds and inaugurate a new donor organization, the St. Anthony of Padua Society, the video achieved all objectives. Production challenges included finding an authentic nun's habit, recreating an adoption scene and capturing the grace and accumulated wisdom of Ms. Opal Dockery, age 99, a thirty-year attendee at a Catholic Charities senior center. When presented at the gala, the St. Anthony of Padua video drew great applause and the evening accomplished new records for donations. October, 2007In connection with World's Baking Showplace (IBIE 2007) in Orlando, Florida, longtime IBT Media client Shick USA commissioned a special project. Seeking to make an impact at this important international show featuring 800 exhibitors spread out over 400,000 square feet of exhibit space, Shick boldly chose to use their large booth space to NOT showcase their complete turnkey automated ingredient handling systems with physical examples of the equipment. They relied on high-impact video instead. Using the theme of Automate This, IBT Media prepared a presentation that ran simultaneously on four 42 inch LCD displays, mounted side by side in Shick's coffee bar area of the booth. Not only did IBT Media prepare the program, we also supplied the playback equipment and monitors, including a 60 inch unit used for other presentations during the tradeshow. Shick reports that the four day event was highly successful for them. October, 2007Working under a Department of Labor Employment and Training Administration grant, in connection with the National Center for the Biotechnology Workforce, IBT Media traveled to Indian Hills Community College (IHCC) in Ottumwa, Iowa and to a large biotechnology complex in nearby Eddyville to produce a video program that explains the center's work and reinforces its mission of providing workers for high growth industries. In addition to documenting laboratory work, sophisticated equipment and classroom procedures, the program also includes interviews with a diverse group. On camera subjects include the President of IHCC, displaced workers who have created better personal futures, a university educated former farmer who took classes with his son's contemporaries, a Ph.D biologist, representatives of local biotech companies and the staff at Iowa Biotech Training Center. July, 2007Four hot, dry, sun-filled, dirty, dusty days in a quarry during mid-summer may not be some people's idea of a good time. Long-time IBT vendor and frequent IBT Media client FLEXCO (Flexible Steel Lacing Company) needed on-location footage of a long belt system in a rock quarry, to show how to best install and service their Rockline products. In Grand Rapids, Michigan, the shoot featured a range of Rockline conveyor products in use including precleaners, secondary belt cleaners, belt positioners, skirt clamps, diagonal plows and a slide idler system that can be configured into slider beds. The finished video series of five titles has joined a whole library of similar FLEXCO works, all designed to help field service personnel get the maximum benefit out of their conveyor belts and associated FLEXCO products. The project, which involved production over a nine month period, resulted in a sixteen minute video, shot and finished completely in HD - high definition. It is titled St. Joseph: Where The West Officially Started Getting Wild. The video is used for visitors as well as for promoting commerce. There is an HD playback at the visitor's center, as well as commercially available DVDs (in standard definition) for sale at the center. City leaders are also using the presentation to help recruit new industry to the city - a campaign that has been successful during the past decade. Because of the span of time for this project, the natural beauty of the city in all four seasons comes through. The history, the livability, the economic vigor, the charm and the traditions that make St. Joseph, Missouri an outstanding community are all well represented in the video. The video has since aired on Kansas City's local public television station, KCPT-TV Channel 19. August, 2006IBT Media in cooperation with BBI International completes production and distribution of Ethanol Production 101: From the Field to the Fuel Pump.
