The Man Behind the CurtainApr, 2010
"We have paid our debt in full with interest," GM’s CEO touted to uproarious cheers.  Kansas City’s Fairfax GM plant hosted the largest event in their company’s recent history.  Executives, Union Officers, and the Governor of Kansas gathered in a press conference before a stage in front of a curtain on the factory floor to announce that the icon American company is back from the brink.  Behind the curtain, IBT Media captured the event’s action.  The show was projected onto large screens inside the plant and tapped into a satellite truck for live broadcast nationwide.

This 45-minute media circus took over a week to plan and coordinate.  Producer John Naughton of IBT Media said, "It was a grand scale, live production.  The variables were tremendous.  The historic moment was unfolding before our eyes.  Yeah, no pressure…  But we have such a great team, we were prepared and the whole thing rolled on without a hitch.  We were all literally "the man behind the curtain.""

IBT Media had a crew of 8 on the scene.  One camera was on a jib getting sweeping overhead shots of the crowd and the stage.  Another camera focused on the speakers at the microphone.  A third camera, hand-held, zipped in and out of the crowd, getting human interest shots.  Behind the curtain, expert sound technicians ensured quality audio, a technical director selected the best camera angles and a switcher operator sent the line feed to the tape decks and the satellite truck.  John did a quick on-site edit of the program and B-Roll to release to news stations all over the country.  Douglas Burton, who ran the main camera during the production, also authored and duplicated a stack of DVDs for GM to use for promotions.

Bonne Terre Mines Underwater Shoot for The History Channel

IBT Media was contracted by the History Channel for an Underwater Video shoot in one of the most demanding conditions, Underwater caves at depths to 100’ to shoot footage for the series “Life After People”. IBT shot the program with the Panasonic HVX200 High-Definition camera with a custom underwater housing.

The video was shot at the Bonne Terre Mines in southeast Missouri. This was the largest Lead Mine in the world active from the mid 1800’s and closed in 1960. When closed the pumps were turned off resulting in the mine flooding with crystal clear 58 degree spring water.

The result was spectacular High-Def underwater footage of a Locomotive, time shed, iron carts, mine tools and the original elevator shaft. This was completed in two one hour dives at depths to 100’. The IBT crew was lighting director Kevin Cloud and underwater videographer Gary Hense along with two safety divers and a guide. The program title is "Depths of Destruction" and aired on the History Channel March 9, 2010.

"We Are Westlake"

"We are Westlake," was shouted from near and far. This 45-minute internal communication video helped Westlake Hardware’s corporate management deliver an important message to its associates. The clever show begins reminiscent of Star Wars, then dissolves into a documentary from the future. A customer played by an actress goes through the isles, talking about how amazing this hardware store is now. Back in the current day, the CEO comes onto the scene and talks directly to the audience about the new business strategy for the future of the company. After the executives say the important stuff, the show continues with the associates hard at work in various store locations in the seven state region, occasionally looking into the camera saying, "We are Westlake."

It was an enormous project to coordinate, and IBT Media rocketed through. This was the first time Westlake has attempted such a communication and they were impressed with IBT Media’s creative tact and the effectiveness of the medium.

Shot in HD and mastered on Blue Ray Disc, the program was shown to all of Westlake’s associates in the same evening, just after the holidays, at AMC Theatres throughout the corporation’s area.

Selex Communications

IBT Media has a perfect three-point landing for the client: One, tell their story. Two, make it creative. Three, deliver on time. In October, the creative team soared through a last-minute marketing campaign for Selex, a company that makes navigational aid systems for airports all over the world. Selex was slated to present a company profile to market themselves to the corporate head at their annual meeting in a week.

“We scrambled, and delivered an awesome video to them in a week that normally would have taken a month,” said John Naughton, of IBT Media, who put in several 16 hour days in order to meet the deadline. And it was not just squeezed through super fast, but super creative. IBT Media’s standards are high.

The result? An impressive show and a happy client. In short, IBT Media is on time and on target.

Loctite/Mr. No Respect

He doesn’t get any respect and he doesn’t give any respect, but he certainly deserves it. Dave King’s triple-engine creation commands a great deal of attention in his tractor-pulling circuit. IBT Media travelled to Connecticut and up-state New York to capture this champion in action. The eye-catching marketing spot produced for Loctite demonstrates the many ways that their unique product keeps this monster in motion. The folks at Loctite were impressed with IBT Media’s professionalism and the awesome impact of the final piece.

Chamber of Commerce

IBT Media’s craft was in the public eye once again at The Greater Kansas City Chamber of Commerce’s Small Business Celebration in May.  For the 5th year in a row, IBT Media produced a video of the Top 10 Small Businesses and a montage of their staff in action, which played at the high-profile awards luncheon.  Each of the Top 10 received an award and recognition for excellence, and one of the businesses was selected for the coveted Mr. K Award, small business of the year.

IBT Media captured the essence of these unique businesses through the stories the executives told.  The interviews were beautifully shot, concisely edited and superimposed over colorful spring flowers and gardens, keeping with the Chamber’s theme this year of Grow Your Business.  In tough economic times, it is even more important to keep focused.

Ordinary Men, Extraordinary Times

A higher calling calls for high-end video. Catholic Diocese of Kansas City - St. Joseph called on IBT Media to produce a 30 second commercial spot inviting men into the Priesthood. The spot is to be broadcast during prime time.

IBT Media Producer John Naughton met with Father Steve Cook, Vocation Director, and discussed the approach to the advertisement. “They wanted something that was dynamic, eye-catching and yet rich with the Catholic Traditions.” The first thing Naughton did was sketch out his ideas in the form of a storyboard. The artwork was detailed enough to give the clients a clear image of the proposed vision – and they liked it.

IBT Media’s videographer Douglas Burton beautifully shot scenes of ritual performed by new Priest Angelo Bartulica. Then the images were built into a story formed with striking effects to accentuate the mystic qualities of the rites. Powerful images and powerful music sometimes say more than words from a narrator, so it was decided to go without a voice over. The result is truly extraordinary.

Naughton said “This spot shows the Priesthood in a positive light, and expresses the great importance of the Vocation.”

Hub City Goes Spanish!

In the global economy, a key communication strategy is to speak to people in their own language. Two years after IBT Media produced a promotional video for Hub City of Aberdeen, South Dakota, the DVD has been expanded to reach Spanish-speaking markets.

Spanish audio tracks were added, giving viewers the option to choose between either English or Spanish. To achieve this, a narration was recorded to over-dub the video. Challenges were met under a tight deadline, and the finished DVD was shown at a Hub City meeting in Mexico in early December. Alton Vilhauer, Marketing Coordinator for Hub City, was pleased with the quick turn-around, and is confident the video will help introduce Hub City to Spanish-speaking audiences, "as we promote our capabilities to our new customers and prospects."

Wherever you are in the global economy, IBT Media speaks your language!

Flexco Wisconsin Mine ShootNovember, 2008
When an old guy takes on a bad guy, the result is most daring.

An armed robbery in Kansas City was interrupted by a Good Samaritan and the confrontation was caught on security camera. Tru-TV of Hollywood, California hired IBT Media to interview the hero and the police Detective assigned to the case.

The interviews were a challenge in two ways. First, lighting and set design had to be meticulously choreographed for the Tru-TV "look." The second challenge was to persuade natural story-telling by people not accustomed to being on camera. These challenges were expertly met by IBT Media’s crew.

Tru-TV’s producer said to John Naughton of IBT Media, "You did a very, very good job and everybody’s extremely happy with the results. And I hope that we get to work with you again soon."

Watch Tru-TV’s Most Shocking or Most Daring for the episode entitled Grandpa Gets Off a Shot. Their slogan is "Not Reality, Actuality!"

Flexco Wisconsin Mine ShootSeptember, 2008
An eight hour drive and bland truck-stop meatloaf couldn’t slow down IBT Media! At a rock mine in Wisconsin (and you thought all they had is cheese!), we were told the secret to success is to take big rocks and make them into little rocks. Such a task requires heavy-duty conveyor belts and Flexco makes the cleaners that keep them running. Video is a useful training tool for the workers who must install the equipment. IBT Media is the full-package production company of choice.

Shooting the installation of a cleaner on a conveyor belt 67 feet in the air has its share of challenges. For instance, if a tool is forgotten, it’s a long way down the cat walk to get what you need. And of course, if you slip, you’re not gonna get a second chance. So we harnessed in our videographer and went to work creating the step-by-step instructional video. IBT Media hasn’t met a challenge that couldn’t be tackled.

Publisher's Clearing HouseJuly, 2008
In July, IBT Media accompanied the Publishers Clearing House prize patrol as they presented a $10,000 award to Julie Clark of Lee's Summit, MO.

Publishers Clearing House has visited the Kansas City area numerous times in the past several years and IBT Media is routinely on hand to capture the reaction of local residents to these surprise visits. Footage is later incorporated into TV commercials promoting Publishers Clearing House.

Flexco Iowa Mine ShootJune, 2008
In June, IBT Media followed the wheat harvest in Kansas, Oklahoma and Nebraska for an upcoming History Channel episode of Modern Marvels: "Wheat." With Modern Marvels: "Bread," under their belts, the IBT Media team was already well versed in the milling and mass baking process. Beginning in the fields of wheat and ending in WheatFields Bakery Cafe, in Lawrence, Kansas, the crew followed the cultivation, harvest and end use of wheat from the greenhouse to the oven and beyond.

Capturing the wheat harvest outside Elk City, Oklahoma, cameraman Bob Brunk risked life and limb, moving in and around five giant threshing combines moving in choreographed sequence. He continued after dark in the headlights of the massive machines, nearly falling into the grain bin going after the ultimate shot. Custom harvester Ron Misener, facilitated the shoot by commanding the movement of the combines via two-way radio, following producer Kaylan Eggert's requests. History was served when an old-timer demonstrated the use of a hand scythe while five combines bore down on him. The project included working in the greenhouses of AgriPro in Junction City, Kansas, where they breed wheat, constantly developing new varieties for the field. Our travels again took us to Kansas State University in Manhattan, Kansas, to shoot in labs and out in the field. Temperatures varied from a chilly visit to a walk-in freezer containing thousands of varieties of seeds to a typically hot Kansas afternoon, shooting Kansas wheat under cultivation. A final stop brought us to Grand Island, Nebraska to see wheat being made into "bio-compostable" products intended to replace everyday items made from plastic. In all, the nine-day adventure marked yet another fine collaboration between Actuality Productions, the producer of Modern Marvels and IBT Media. Watch for the show on the History Channel, soon.

Flexco Iowa Mine ShootJune, 2008
Deep under Iowa’s rich farmland is another bounty which is harvested: Rock and minerals. Conveyor belts are an essential part of every mining operation. Fine chalky powder in the damp environment becomes a clay mud that dries into cement which builds up. The belts must be cleaned to avoid loss of product and costly breakdowns. Flexco provides the tools to get the job done efficiently. Martin Marietta Durham Mine near Pella, Iowa hosted IBT Media for Flexco’s next edition in the series of belt cleaner installation videos.

IBT Media traveled 150 feet down into the world’s underbelly. We followed a maze of tunnels into the abyss, burning Biodiesel in trucks that never see the light of day. The abyss was very much a world of its own, reminiscent of the Batcave. A complete lack of light, high rock ceilings, pillars carved into the earth, twists and turns can lead one to feel lost. The biggest challenges… the dark, the cold and the dust. Video requires good light. A generator rattled as flood lights were placed around the work area. The camera had a Sun Gun mounted on top to shine anywhere the lens was pointed. It was 90 degrees and sunny outside. Inside the mine, it was 54 degrees and dank. The cameraman was so cold his fingers went numb. Keep an eye on the Flexco website for the video.

World's Greatest: McPherson College Automotive Restoration TechnologyJune, 2008
IBT Media dodged tornado spawning thunderstorms and emerged in an oasis where automobiles of by-gone eras are resurrected: McPherson College, the only accredited college that offers a 4-year degree in Automotive Restoration Technology. The final show will be featured on World’s Greatest, a Discover Entertainment program distributed mainly via internet.

Their mission: "To prepare students for leadership in the field of professional automotive restoration by instilling values of craftsmanship, authenticity and integrity." Every detail of the original cars, right down to the last stitch in the leather upholstery, is meticulously researched and recreated in their shop. The students learn from some of the best restorers in the world, how to rebuild a pile of rusting history from the ground up. Comedian Jay Leno is a supporter of the college, having purchased several of their restored cars and offering a full ride scholarship to a hard-working student every year.

Modern Marvels: The RatFebruary, 2008
IBT Media spent a day with faculty and students at Nebraska Wesleyan University in Lincoln, Nebraska as they demonstrated the talents of trained rats. Footage from the shoot will be incorporated into a new Modern Marvels episode, Rats. The rats learn physical feats during a Basic Behavior Principles class within the Department of Psychology. The training culminates in an annual event, Xtreme Rat Challenge, at the end of the semester.

Despite their training, the rats were rather unpredictable in front of the camera. At times, the Varicam HD camera and boom mic were close enough for the rats to jump onboard and, more than once, they did. In addition to unfamiliar lighting and crew, the "rat cam" (another camera inspired by Modern Marvels producer Kaylan Eggert) captured the action at their level as they climbed, crawled, jumped and swam through each challenge. In the end, it was another successful shoot by IBT Media. Watch for Modern Marvels: Rats to air April 28, 2008 on the History Channel.

Modern Marvels: World's StrongestJanuary, 2008
As part of its continuing work with the History Channel, IBT Media joined the Navy, at least momentarily. Traveling with full video equipment, IBT Media landed on USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76) which was doing maneuvers off the coast of California. A flight from NAS North Island (Coronado, California) on January 29 to the USS Ronald Reagan flight deck was the mode of transportation for a video shoot of the on-going Modern Marvels series on the History Channel.

The Reagan will be part of the third episode in a series on the World’s Strongest. The scenes on the Reagan highlight the carrier’s four deck edge elevators. Each of the elevators can lift two aircraft from the hangar bay below to the 4.5-acre flight deck in seconds. The maximum lift capacity is 200,000 lbs. with an average lift cycle of 10 seconds. IBT Media departed the following day on a return flight on a US Navy C-2A aircraft. Be sure to catch the details of the Reagan on Modern Marvels when World’s Strongest airs March 6, 2008. You can view the full episode on The History Channel's Web site.

Possessed by PinkNovember, 2007
Far flung forces gathered in Kansas City to promote petunias. Theo Gabay, of Swedish production company Appetite, met up with flowers from Florida, on-camera talent from Kansas City and a novel idea. The result is a :30 TV commercial that urges viewers to "accept the gardener" in themselves. The ad uses humor to sell Wave Petunias by Ball Horticultural. Wave addicts meet and confess their obsession. The "Twelve Step" program on the wall helps them accept their irresistible urges. Actors in pink outfits with Wave’s patented pink pots as hats sit in a half circle, emulating group therapy.

IBT Media made all production arrangements including cast, crew, hair, make-up and post-production. Mr. Gabay, a music video/TV/corporate presentation producer says he looks forward to working with IBT Media again soon. “This was one of the smoothest run productions I have ever directed.” He credits IBT Media’s talent, creativity, flexibility and reasonable rates as key points. Watch for Brenda’s PP Meeting: Possessed by Pink on the HGTV network this spring.

St. Anthony of Padua Society video, Catholic Charities of Kansas City and St. JosephNovember, 2007
The annual gala auction of Catholic Charities of Kansas City and St. Joseph (Missouri) is always a time of great excitement, fellowship and generosity for the several hundred benefactors who come out for a grand evening. This year's event, held at Kansas City's Downtown Marriott, had a special feature: the premiere of a new video produced for Catholic Charities by IBT Media.

Designed to touch hearts, raise funds and inaugurate a new donor organization, the St. Anthony of Padua Society, the video achieved all objectives. Production challenges included finding an authentic nun's habit, recreating an adoption scene and capturing the grace and accumulated wisdom of Ms. Opal Dockery, age 99, a thirty-year attendee at a Catholic Charities senior center. When presented at the gala, the St. Anthony of Padua video drew great applause and the evening accomplished new records for donations.

Shick Automate This at IBIEOctober, 2007
In connection with World's Baking Showplace (IBIE 2007) in Orlando, Florida, longtime IBT Media client Shick USA commissioned a special project. Seeking to make an impact at this important international show featuring 800 exhibitors spread out over 400,000 square feet of exhibit space, Shick boldly chose to use their large booth space to NOT showcase their complete turnkey automated ingredient handling systems with physical examples of the equipment. They relied on high-impact video instead.

Using the theme of Automate This, IBT Media prepared a presentation that ran simultaneously on four 42 inch LCD displays, mounted side by side in Shick's coffee bar area of the booth. Not only did IBT Media prepare the program, we also supplied the playback equipment and monitors, including a 60 inch unit used for other presentations during the tradeshow. Shick reports that the four day event was highly successful for them.

Indian Hills Community College in Ottumwa, IowaOctober, 2007
Working under a Department of Labor Employment and Training Administration grant, in connection with the National Center for the Biotechnology Workforce, IBT Media traveled to Indian Hills Community College (IHCC) in Ottumwa, Iowa and to a large biotechnology complex in nearby Eddyville to produce a video program that explains the center's work and reinforces its mission of providing workers for high growth industries.

In addition to documenting laboratory work, sophisticated equipment and classroom procedures, the program also includes interviews with a diverse group. On camera subjects include the President of IHCC, displaced workers who have created better personal futures, a university educated former farmer who took classes with his son's contemporaries, a Ph.D biologist, representatives of local biotech companies and the staff at Iowa Biotech Training Center.

FLEXCO quarry shoot in Grand Rapids, MichiganJuly, 2007
Four hot, dry, sun-filled, dirty, dusty days in a quarry during mid-summer may not be some people's idea of a good time. Long-time IBT vendor and frequent IBT Media client FLEXCO (Flexible Steel Lacing Company) needed on-location footage of a long belt system in a rock quarry, to show how to best install and service their Rockline products.

In Grand Rapids, Michigan, the shoot featured a range of Rockline conveyor products in use including precleaners, secondary belt cleaners, belt positioners, skirt clamps, diagonal plows and a slide idler system that can be configured into slider beds. The finished video series of five titles has joined a whole library of similar FLEXCO works, all designed to help field service personnel get the maximum benefit out of their conveyor belts and associated FLEXCO products.
